As of June 2023, the European Union has ratified the Istanbul Convention of the Council of Europe, which is the most comprehensive legal framework to combat violence against women. Directives against sexual harassment, and against human trafficking, and the most recent proposal for a Directive on violence against women and domestic violence, (proposed in March 2022, still to be adopted by the Council and the European Parliament) are all part of a holistic approach to make Europe a safe place for women and girls. The proposals therein echo G5+ recommendations in its report “’Ending Violence Against Women: the Istanbul Convention and Beyond’” written by Prof.Dr Teresa Freixes, Professor of Constitutional Law, Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and Jean Monnet Chair ad personam.
