The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), in collaboration with the Government of Iceland, has announced the commencement of nominations for the inaugural Vigdís Prize for Women’s Empowerment. This joint effort between the Icelandic Government and PACE honors the legacy of the former Icelandic President, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the world’s first woman elected as a Head of State.

Endowed with an annual prize of 60,000 euros, this recognition is dedicated to outstanding initiatives fostering women’s empowerment in all its forms. The prize encompasses achievements in gender equality, equal participation in decision-making, and initiatives promoting inclusive policies. Both individuals and civil society groups, including national or international non-governmental organisations, associations and private companies are eligible candidates for this prize, which will be awarded during each June part-session of the Parliamentary Assembly.

The nominations must be written in either English or French and they must be signed by at least five people. The deadline for nominations is on February 15, 2024, and nominations should be sent to the email address vigdis.prize@coe.int.
